This is a very nice looking Japanese lacquer kogo – covered box – that measures 4 1/8” long by 3 ½” wide by 2 ¼” deep. It has a black lacquer ground (roiro) with a red lacquer rim on the top. That is covered all over by gold makie flowers and vines – top and sides. The interior of the kogo has an unusual type of nashiji – pear skin – in that it has a mottled effect made with two different shades of the blown lacquer. The bottom is covered with the more usually found all gold nashiji. Nashiji is a type of Japanese lacquerware, which is frequently employed for the background of a pattern. Gold or silver flakes called nashiji-ko are sprinkled onto the surface of the object (excluding the design), on which lacquer has been applied. Nashiji lacquer is then applied and burnished with charcoal. We date this kogo to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850-1880s. It is in generally fine condition – there are three small frits on the bottom of one end of the lid. There is a Christies auction label on the base dated February 6, 1998. |
