This is a lovely pair of thin walled chawan – tea cups – from the Arita kilns. Each of the two cups has a fine relief design on the inside walls. The designs appear to be fans and bows – hard to photograph with clarity. In the bottom of the cups is a dark cobalt blue design that we cannot make out – there do appear to be some elongated scales so it could be a curled dragon. Just below the upper rim the inside of the cups at the very top there is a band of blue geometric figures like linked vines. The top of the rim is a thin brown over glaze enamel color. The cups measure 3 ½” at the top by 2 ¼” high by 1 7/8” diameter at the base. Both cups are signed on their bases with four characters - the translation is as follows "Sentoku Nensei"( in Japanese) which means Sentoku year made in English. In Chinese it is the Xuande period (1426-1435, Ming dynasty) marking. We believe they actually date to the late Edo period, circa 1800-1850. Both cups are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. |
