This is an early 19th century, Edo period, Arita plate with a design of three bare branches in a reserve in the center of the plate. A circle of stylized leaves surrounds these branches. It is possible that this is meant to represent the Three Friends of Winter – plum, bamboo and pine – but the only stem that we can clearly identify is that of the bamboo. The outer border design is of two large blue on white leaves with two smaller white on blue flowers alternating with the larger leaves. The back of the plate has some loosely drawn karakusa vines at the upper side near the rim. The plate measures 7 ½” diameter and is 1” high. There are three spur marks on the bottom – an indication of 19th century manufacture as these were used at that time. Spur marks were caused by small pyramids of clay separating plates in the kiln so that they would fire evenly. The white porcelain on the plate has some slight crackle from age and from the firing. The plate is in excellent condition with no chips, hairlines or restorations.
