A Hirado Koro with Open Work Bronze Lid – Edo/Meiji
This is a fine Japanese Hirado porcelain koro (censer) with a design of chidori (plovers) flying over the waves on two sides of the body. It stands on tripod legs and has handles in the form of a mythical beast’s face. The decoration is executed in the traditional Hirado underglaze Hirado blue. The lid is an open domed lid of bronze in a stylized shape of a chrysanthemum.

The koro is in excellent condition – there is a small stain near the rim on one side of the body. No chips, cracks or restorations. The piece measures 5” diameter and is 3 ½” high. We date it to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850s-1880s.
