This is a striking Japanese studio vase – the main body is almost globular shape- then it tapers to a narrow neck and then flares out to wide thick rim. The underglaze is a dark chocolate color. At the shoulder the glaze is lighter – almost a milk chocolate – that has five black rings encircling the top of the vase. Then – before straightening out to the vertical rim, the brown glaze goes back to the darker brown. The upper shoulder and the main body of the vase has a design of interlocking medium green drip glazes – almost a dark turquoise green. The bottom rim is plain brown- and shows signs of use. The inside of the vase has the same brown and medium green design as the body. The vase measures 5 ¼” high and is 4 ¼” diameter at its widest. It is in excellent condition. It is not signed. We date to somewhere between the 1920s and the 1950s – Taisho to Showa period. |
