This is a three piece pewter tea caddy from China, circa 1850s- 1880s. On its rounded sides it has low relief designs of a blossoming plum tree – a spray of bamboo - and a lovely group of chrysanthemums. On the lid there is an interesting geometric design of intertwined vines. The tea caddy measures 4” high and is 3 ¼” diameter at its widest. The original three pieces are intact with the inner seal fitting nice and tight – it could be used today without any problem of loss of aroma.
There is a large mark on the base which we have not been able to get translated. The piece is in excellent condition with a couple of tiny dents. Pewter is a malleable metal alloy, traditionally between 85 and 99 percent tin, with the remainder consisting of copper, antimony, bismuth and lead. Copper and antimony act as hardeners while lead is common in the lower grades of pewter, which have a bluish tint.
