This is a most unusual ceramic piece – the use of which we have never been able to quite determine. The ceramic globe shaped main body has a light tan crackle finish glaze. It has a bronze handle that is attached to the pottery body with two elaborate fasteners that are clearly of Chinese origin. The rim of the hinged lid and the top of the pot are made of simple bands of bronze. The hinged top has as solid bronze cover that has bands of rope like relief. When the lid is opened, the diameter of the opening is 1 1/8” diameter. Just below the top, there is a small hole surrounded by bronze fittings – the hole is less than ¼ “ diameter. The entire piece measures 4 ½” high to the top of the finial - the main body of the pot measures 4” diameter at its widest. The pot is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks – the unglazed bottom shows signs of usage – and the overall patina is excellent with the bronze never having been polished. Our best guess as to its use is that it is a combination brush washer and water dropper to be used by scholars when doing calligraphy or paintings. That would explain the wider opening and lid at the top and the smaller opening where water could have been dripped onto an ink stone. We date it to the 19th century, Qing dynasty - possibly even older. |
