This is a mid 20th century Chinese multi-drawer small wooden chest that has no apparent way to open the drawers. The box measures 10” wide by 5 ½” deep by 6” tall. There are six drawers – three small ones in the top level – one wide on in the middle level – and two medium size in the lowest level The chest has a gated opening with two doors. There are hand cut metal fittings as the four hinges – the all of the corners have reinforced corners made from the same hand cut metal. The opening of the two doors has an elaborate latch on a large metal fitting that has an incised design. All of the metal fittings have a grayish tone – possibly oxidation – or possibly left over from an attempt to polish the fittings. All of the drawers have a red material in the bottom – it might have been used as a jewelry box and the thick red material kept the contents from being scratched. The box itself is made of a light colored wood – possibly pine or some Asian wood with which we are unfamiliar. The entire piece is in very good condition – some light scratches from usage. The unusual feature of the box is that none of the drawers have drawer pulls or handles. The drawers are opened by reaching behind the box and pushing the respective drawer open through a round finger hold. We date the piece to the early to mid 20th century. |
