A Japanese Makie Lacquer Temple Offering Stand – Meiji
This is a handsome lacquer stand with makie designs on all four sides and a red lacquer top. Two of the sides have round holes in them – the other two are solid makie design. The design incorporates evergreen boughs connected with intertwined vines. There are also two different mons – family crests – as part of the design. The underside of the top and the inside of the stand have light sprinklings of nashiji – pear skin – lacquer on a black roiro ground.

The stand measures 4 1/2” square at the overhanging top and is 4” high. It is in excellent condition. There are some minor frits to the edges and a tiny nick in the red top. We date it to the late Meiji period, circa 1880s – 1910.
